in his backpack to share God’s Word with gatherings large and small. As a local church
pastor and then as a denominational president, John’s leadership has been described
as a “caring, creative, change-agent.”
At age 47, a sudden health crisis upended John’s life. In one week, John went from
being an ultra-marathon runner to not being strong enough to drive a car. Seventy-
seven days of hospitalization later, John entered a long season of recovery in a wheel

John up again and he views each day as a gift.
Dr. Stumbo has various degrees and has authored five books, but his biggest smiles
come from being with his wife of 43 years, Joanna, and from his family which includes
five grandchildren. Throw in a fishing pole, tennis racket or pickleball paddle, and the
smile gets even bigger. He’s excited to be back in his home state for Man Up North as
he now lives in “exile” in central Ohio where he’s attempting to transform a small
backyard swamp into a bass pond.
